अहोई अष्टमी व्रत कथा
बहुत समय पहले एक साहूकार की पत्नी दीपावली से पहले घर की सजावट के लिए जंगल से मिट्टी लेने गई। मिट्टी खोदते समय उसकी कुदाल से एक सियार के बच्चे को चोट लग गई और वह मर गया। यह घटना अनजाने में हुई, लेकिन साहूकार की पत्नी को बहुत पछतावा हुआ। कुछ समय बाद उसके सातों पुत्र एक-एक करके असमय मृत्यु को प्राप्त हो गए। दुखी होकर वह एक साधुनी के पास गई और अपनी पीड़ा बताई।
साधुनी ने उसे कार्तिक मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी तिथि को अहोई माता का व्रत रखने और पूजा करने की सलाह दी। साहूकार की पत्नी ने श्रद्धा और भक्ति से व्रत रखा, अहोई माता की पूजा की और व्रत कथा सुनी। उसकी सच्ची प्रार्थना से प्रसन्न होकर अहोई माता ने उसे आशीर्वाद दिया और उसके सभी पुत्र जीवित हो गए।
तब से यह व्रत माताएं अपनी संतान की लंबी उम्र, सुख-समृद्धि और सुरक्षा के लिए करती हैं। इस दिन तारों को अर्घ्य देकर व्रत खोला जाता है और अहोई माता की कथा सुनना अनिवार्य माना जाता है। यह कथा मातृत्व, पश्चाताप और आस्था की शक्ति को दर्शाती है।
Rahu, a planet linked to karmic lessons and unexpected difficulties, rules Ahoi Ashtami. It is said that keeping this fast will calm Rahu’s might and draw blessings from Lord Shiva and Ahoi Mata. Monday is ruled by the Moon, which represents emotional fortitude and motherhood, making this year’s commemoration particularly powerful.
In the month of Kartik, on the Ahoi Ashtmi Tithi of Krishna Paksha, Ahoi Ashtami is celebrated. Traditionally, mothers pray to Goddess Ahoi Mata, a manifestation of Parvati, for their children’s long life, prosperity, and protection while fasting from sunrise till the evening stars emerge.
Today, the fast is lovingly honored for both boys and daughters, reflecting changing family attitudes, even though it was traditionally kept for sons.
🙏 Customs and Rituals
- Fasting: From sunrise until the stars come out, mothers follow a rigorous fast. Only after praying to the stars are food and water ingested.
- Ahoi Mata Puja: On the wall is a printed poster or a hand-drawn picture of Ahoi Mata. Water, silver coins, and wheat grains are among the offerings.
Storytelling (Vrat Katha): The story of a mother who lost her children after inadvertently hurting a cub is told. The festival’s spiritual center is her atonement by devotion to Ahoi Mata. - Arghya to Stars: Mothers break their fast with hope and thankfulness and offer water (Arghya) when the stars are visible.
